Foundation Construction Awards (FCA)

The foundation construction award is an excellent place to begin your career in construction. Each of our FCA courses cover the basics of the trades and are designed to train students up to a craft level within the industry and allow you to gain a nationally recognised formal qualification as accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Each course is made up of a mixture of theory and practical work and looks closely at self-development. All courses are free provided you meet certain eligibility criteria. Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying)

What will I learn?

Building a portfolio of both practical and theory work, you will study a variety of tasks such as:
  • Mortar mixtures
  • Brick & block laying
  • Setting out
  • Tools & equipment
  • Site organisation
  • Health & Safety
  • Handling & storing of resources
  • Simple scaffolding
How do I join the course?
After you enquire, you will be invited in for an interview. During this interview you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. We will also assess your basic maths and English to make sure you receive any support that you may need. In most cases, a sound understanding of the English language along with reading and writing are appropriate. A mature and enthusiastic attitude to construction as well as a genuine interest in learning is needed.

How long is the course?
Dependant on your ability, the course can last from six months to 1 year.

What happens when I finish the course?
Successful students can progress on to an ICA (Intermediate Construction Award), modern apprenticeship or even find employment.

Do I need to take any exams?
During your course you will develop a portfolio based on a mixture of theory and practical work. An online test may be included at the end of your course.

Anything else I should know?
You will need to have safety boots and overalls. In some cases, we can provide the necessary but you will need to ask the tutor as this is not always possible. Call us now on 0121 773 4332 to book your place.


Wood Occupations (Carpentry & Joinery)

What will I learn?

As with all FCA qualifications, your work is a mixture of practical and theory elements. You will study the following topics:
  • Preparation of power tools
  • Use of power tools
  • Wood jointing techniques
  • Maintenance & use of woodworking hand tools
  • Hatches & frames
  • Site organisation
  • Health & Safety
  • Handling & storing of resources
  • Simple scaffolding

Decorative Occupations (Painting & Decorating)

What will I learn?

Working through tasks set in both theory and in practical format, you will learn the basics of the trade including:
  • Applying emulsion to walls, doors and frames
  • Artexing
  • Glazing
  • Stripping
  • Wallpapering
  • Rust removal and priming of metal
  • Handling & storing of materials
  • Simple Scaffolding

Construction : Carpentry

One of our most popular courses, carpentry is a skill that can lead to all kinds of opportunities. You will learn the basic skills, develop a knowledge of the tools of the trade, network with other budding carpenters and build a portfolio of your work that will guide you towards a certificate issued by the Construction Industry Training Board. Successful completion can lead to an intermediate course, a modern apprenticeship or even a job.
Construction : Painting & Decorating

An insight into what can be a lucrative career as a professional decorator taught by some of the most skilled tradesman of their generation. This course will set you on your way to becoming one of the decorating elite. Learning the basic techniques of the trade, you will work within a team to establish a portfolio of achievements that will lead you to a nationally recognised certificate awarded by the CITB. Progression can lead to an intermediate course, a modern apprenticeship, a job or even setting up your own business.
Construction : Bricklaying

Undoubtedly our most demanded course. You will gain the hands-on practical experience of building walls, straight and decorative features. You will receive knowledge on all areas of bricklaying making you competent and confident within the trade. Taught by a highly experienced team you will gain knowledge of the 'brickie' industry that is unmatched anywhere else. Successful candidates have even gone on to jobs and even setting up on their own.
