Hairdressing NVQ 1

Can you imagine training for a career that would allow you to work in a salon or start your own business?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of the questions above then maybe you should consider studying a NVQ 1 in hairdressing. The course is practical and will give you the chance to develop some of the skills that you would need to work in the hairdressing industry.

What will I do on the course?
You will complete practical and written work on various hairdressing tasks:-
  • Shampoo and conditioning hair and scalp
  • Reception duties
  • Assisting with stylists
  • Health and safety
  • Removing colours
  • neutralising hair
You will be introduced to many other practical skills in styling, colouring and cutting. You may also study essential skills including application of number, communication and IT to support your practical work and career development.

How do I get on the course?
In most cases, a sound understanding of English along with reading and writing skills are appropriate. We will assess you before you start to make sure that you receive any extra help that you may need. You should also have a good personal appearance and presentation, be enthusiastic and have a genuine interest in hairdressing and enjoy working with people and as part of a team.

How long is the course?
Dependant on your own ability, the course can last from 6 months to 1 year.

What happens when I finish the course?
If you complete the level 1 qualification and have an excellent attendance record and report, then you can progress onto a level 2 course to develop your skills further in all areas of hairdressing and preparing you to become a qualified hairdresser. If you complete your course and would prefer to work in a salon, this qualification will provide you with the knowledge to start as an apprentice.

Do I have to take any written exams?
You will take a written paper as well as completing assignments. You will also work towards essential skills and develop a portfolio of work.

Anything else I should know?
The course provides you with the foundations to become a qualified hairdresser. You will be expected to attend a placement in industry for the duration of you course. In addition to your course you will be encouraged to attend a number of events including competitions to develop your skills. All assessments are completed on clients/members of the general public and excellent communication skills are required.

Hairdressing NVQ 2

What will I do on the course?
You will study the basic skills and knowledge needed to become a competent hairdresser. Level 2 is the national requirement for being a registered hairdresser.Aspects of study include:-
  • Blow drying
  • Colouring
  • Cutting
  • Health and safety
  • Perms
  • Reception
  • Setting
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Working as a team
You may also study essential skills in application of number, communication and IT to support your practical work and career development.

How do I get on the course?
A good record of achievement that will normally include 4 GCSEs at grade D including English or maths, or a pass at NVQ level 1, good interpersonal skills and a keen interest in hairdressing.

How long is the course?
Dependant on your ability, the course can last from 6 months to 1 year.

What happens when I finish the course?
The course will prepare you for employment in a salon or as a self-employed hairdresser. Other opportunities include progression onto the next level of qualification.

Do I have to take any written exams?
There is continual practical assessment and written tests. You may also take external exams in key skills.

Anything else I should know?
You will be studying in a busy, fast moving environment. You will take part in competitions, enrichments, visits, trips, attend talks and demonstrations. An essential part of the course is taking part in a work placement in a commercial salon.

Beauty Therapy NVQ 1

Have you ever been to have your nails done and thought, "I could do this job"?
Do you enjoy working with the general public? Have you ever thought of turning your interest in manicures and skincare into a career?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of the questions above then maybe you should consider studying a NVQ 1 in beauty therapy. The course is practical and will give you the chance to develop some of the skills that you would need to work in the beauty therapy industry.

What will I do on the course?
You study introductory units in:-
  • Manicure
  • Skincare
  • Working on a salon reception
  • Working in a salon dispensary
  • Health & safety in the salon setting
  • How to prepare the work area
You may also study essential skills including application of number, communication and IT to support your practical work and career development.

How do I get on the course?

You will meet guest speakers who will come into the salon and demonstrate their products and services. You will also go on a number of trips including beauty exhibitions.

Beauty Therapy NVQ 2

What will I study?
  • Customer care and teamwork
  • Facial massage and skin care
  • Hair removal methods – sugaring and waxing
  • Health and safety
  • Make-up techniques
  • Manicure and pedicure techniques
  • Reception duties
  • Eye treatments
You may also study essential skills including application of number, communications and IT to support your practical work and career development.

What are the entry requirements?
A good record of achievement that will normally include 4 GCSEs at grade D, including English or maths or a pass at NVQ level 1, plus good interpersonal skills and a keen interest in beauty.

How long is the course?
Dependant on your ability, the course can last from 6 months to 1 year.

What will this course prepare me for?
Progression to NVQ level 3 or employment on cruise liners, in beauty salons, health farms, sports clinics/ centres, remedial massage centres or self-employment.

  • Continuous reviews and practical assessments
  • Written assignments including case studies
  • External examinations
