The United Kingdom has a points based system, with various tiers. The tier you should be applying for to study is Tier 4. You must apply and be accepted to obtain a Visa or you cannot study in the United Kingdom.
There are different types of application for tier 4 as identified below.
Adult student
You can apply as an adult student if you are coming to the United Kingdom for your post-16 education. Majority of our students fall into this category.
Student visitor
You can apply as a student visitor if you are 18 years old or over, you want to come to the United Kingdom to do a course for up to six months, and you do not want to work while you are here. You will not be able to switch and apply for an adult student visa while you are in the United Kingdom as a student visitor. If you want to apply for an adult student visa, you must apply from the country you live in.
Prospective student
You can apply as a prospective student if you want to come to the United Kingdom to help you decide which course to study or if you plan to start a course of study within six months. You will be able to switch and apply for an adult or child student visa while you are in the United Kingdom.
What you need when you apply for a visa
You need 40 points to be able to apply for a student visa. You will need to provide the evidence needed with your application form.

| Doing a course at an acceptable level with an approved education provider (also known as sponsorship) | A confirmation of acceptance for studies reference number issued by BIETTEC, and the documents used to obtain it. |
You must also arrange for UKBA to record your biometric information (photograph and fingerprints).

This depends on where you apply from. The fees are shown below.
- Inside the UK by post – £357
- Inside the UK in person at a public enquiry office – £565
- Outside the UK – £145
Application Form
The application form is available from the UKBA website, currently the application required is VAF9 – PBS Migrant and PBS Appendix 8 General Student. Please contact the UKBA before applying to make sure the forms are correct as their may be updates they have not yet released that could affect you.
Appeals
You can appeal against a refusal of a Visa. Once you have your reasons use the PBS Administrative Review Request Notice Form available from the website below.
